Sound doctrine is no longer endured

Prophecy of 2 Tim 4:3,4 is now fulfilled

2 Tim 4:3,4. KJV.
V3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; V4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned unto fables.

Interpretation and fulfilment:

V3 'the time will come'
The time has come. We may now say, "this is the time..." That time is present.

V3 'when they will not endure sound doctrine'
Many professing Christians today when they hear correct biblical interpretations cannot tolerate it. 'Endure' in Greek = they will not put up with it.

V3 'but after their own lusts'
They reject the truth because of their own lusts. They walk after the lusts of the flesh pleasing the carnal mind, which is not subject to the law of God. (Rm. Ch 8)

V3 'shall they heap to themselves teachers'
The steady increase and success of false teachers arising has been encouraged by a deliberate accumulation of them by professing Christians. False teachers would not have been so successful had they not been so gladly welcomed.

V3 'having itching ears'
Their ears have a tickle that needs to be scratched. The tickle is their lusts. What scratches it is the false teachers.

V4 'and they shall turn away their ears from the truth'
The inevitable result. Again we may now say, "they have turned away". The general state of professing Christendom is that it has turned away from the truth.

V4 'and shall be turned unto fables'
They have turned from the truth. They have turned to fables. The cause: their fleshly lusts and carnal mind. 'Fables' in Greek = stories, true or invented.

Professing Christians today cannot tolerate the truth. Today's preaching and Christian interest in general is not in sound doctrine or biblical preaching, but in story telling, whether true or invented.
